Rooftop tent fabrics explained: poly-cotton canvas, Oxford and waterproof ratings

Poly-cotton canvas

A polyester and cotton blend, usually specified by weight (for example 280 g or 300 g per square metre). The cotton fibres swell when wet, which helps seal the weave, while the polyester adds strength.

Strengths: breathable, less condensation, quieter, comfortable in heat and cold. Watch out for: longer drying time and mildew risk if packed wet.

Oxford polyester

A woven polyester described by denier (D) — the thickness of the yarn. 150D is light, 420D is a common middle ground and 600D is heavy duty. Oxford is almost always PU-coated for waterproofing.

Strengths: light, fast drying, colourfast and economical. Watch out for: more condensation than canvas; noisier in wind.

Waterproof ratings

The hydrostatic head, in millimetres, is the height of a water column the coated fabric resists before leaking. Ratings of 2000–3000 mm are common for tent flys and awnings. A higher number is not the whole story:

  • seams must be taped or sealed,
  • zips need storm flaps,
  • the shape must shed water instead of pooling it.

Choosing by product

Product Common fabric Why
Hard shell rooftop tent 280–300 g poly-cotton or 300D Oxford Protected by the shell when closed
Soft shell rooftop tent 600D Oxford or poly-cotton plus PVC cover Cover protects in transit
Awning 420D/600D Oxford or 280 g poly-cotton Light and UV resistant
Annex room 420D Oxford Light and easy to pack
Shower tent 420D Oxford or canvas Quick drying

Care advice for your dealers

Open the tent to dry after wet nights, clean with water and mild soap, and avoid storing it closed and damp for long periods.

Key takeaways

  • Canvas for comfort; Oxford for weight and price.
  • Hydrostatic head is one part of waterproofing — construction is the other.
  • Specify fabric, coating and seam treatment in your purchase order.

Frequently asked questions

What does 600D mean?

D stands for denier, a measure of yarn thickness. 600D Oxford uses thicker yarn than 420D or 150D and is more abrasion resistant.

Is 3000 mm waterproof enough?

For tent flys and awnings, 2000–3000 mm is widely used. Seams, zips and the shape of the tent matter as much as the number.

Why does canvas reduce condensation?

Cotton fibres absorb and release moisture, so less water condenses on the inside surface than with coated polyester.
